January 15, 2009: Free Coin Contest, NYINC and FUN, Gold Confiscation?

2007 Reverse Proof Platinum EaglesWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news from around the web. First, a story on the potential for another gold confiscation. Also, a free coin contest from Coin Network, the US Mint’s official press release on the new pricing policy, challenge coins, the Royal British Mint design contest, more NYINC and FUN, coin buying in 2009, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Is another gold confiscation a possibility? Personally, I am skeptical, but here’s a well laid out argument to the contrary.

Over at Coin Network, there’s a free contest open to all members. There will be a total of 55 winners. All you need to do is invite a friend to Coin Network and respond in the official contest thread.

The US Mint has issued a press release regarding their new pricing policy following their second price adjustment for gold coins.

Yesterday, NBC ran a story on Challenge Coins. Coin Collector’s Blog has some historical background and an embed of the NBC report.

The Stella Coin News Library expands with two additional reference books available online free. The guides cover Washington Quarters and Buffalo Nickels.

A brief story on Business Week about eBay’s cooperation with Italian police to track down a seller of looted ancient coins and jewelry.

More information on the British Royal Mint design competition, including a video segment.

The World Coin News review of the New York International Numismatic Convention published on Numismaster.

Numismatic News reports on the ANA Town Hall meeting held at FUN.

An interesting read. The New Rules: Coin Buying in 2009.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a fantastic Rainbow Morgan Dollar. It’s an 1885-O graded PCGS MS65 that sports wide bands of vibrant color.

A nice 1968-D Lincoln Cent Off Center Error. At 85%, it’s just about as off center as possible while still showing a full date and mint mark.

I think this is about the same price you could have got them for in 1986. With multiple coins available, here is the 1986-S Statue of Liberty Proof Silver Dollar at $19.95 with free shipping.

I’ll probably be offline tomorrow, so if you don’t hear from me sooner, have a great weekend!

I don’t know how you can classify the rantings of 321Gold as a well laid out argument. The assertions, misinformation, and leaps of logic were spectacular. By stating it is “well laid out” you give merit where none is due.
