Julia Tyler First Sposue Gold CoinWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re back for one more round up of coin collecting news and articles to take you into the weekend! First, the recent strong prices for the Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin. Also, cracking out coins, designer of the 2010 Lincoln Cent, fate of the Canadian penny, Philadelphia Mint, 2010 Proof Silver Eagles, new Rupee symbol, Snopes.com interview, Boston ANA convention, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Prices for the Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins show big gains compared to the last available US Mint prices. Will this wake up collectors to other low mintage issues of the series?

The latest Coingrader Capsule describes how author Michael Bugeja cracks out coins from third party grading holders.

Lyndall Bass, the designer of the “Union Shield” Lincoln Cent, will be making an appearance in Milton, Delaware to give away pennies and sign autographs. Some of her paintings and prints will also be on display.

A fresh article on the future of the Canadian penny, which reveals some of the discussions Canadian officials had with other countries who eliminated their lowest denomination coins.

A brief article on growth of the Philadelphia Mint, which includes a nice gallery of historical images.

With theĀ  year already half gone and demand for silver bullion running at record levels, the prospects of 2010 Proof Silver Eagles being minted seem increasingly bleak.

India has approved a new currency symbol for the Rupee, which is “an amalgam of the Devnagiri ‘Ra’ and the Roman capital ‘R’ without the stem.”

An interview with the operators of the Snopes.com website, which debunks or confirms rumors. I first came across the site in relation to the claim that “In God We Trust” had been left off the Presidential Dollar. This (debunked) rumor is discussed within the interview.

Highlights from the upcoming Bowers and Merena Boston Rarities Auction include a 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 64, an 1854-O Liberty Double Eagle graded PCGS AU55, and an 1870-S Seated Liberty Silver Dollar graded PCGS EF40.

The PCGS booth at the Boston ANA Convention will include a display of early proof copper coins from the ESM Collection.

And now for some notable auctions. First, here’s a collection of 22 PCGS Morgan Dollars along with one more GSA Carson City Morgan Dollar. The PCGS graded coins are housed within old green holders and rattler holders.

Next, a complete run of 2000-2009 US Mint Two Roll Sets for State Quarters and Territorial Quarters. The starting bid is less than the combined original issue prices.

Last, the high denomination, low mintage 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition $50 Gold Coin. This is the round version graded PCGS MS61.

That concludes another update. Have an enjoyable weekend!
