We’re back with one final round up of coin collecting news to take you into the weekend. First, gold posts another weekly gain. Also, three sold out US Mint products examined, the ANA announces award recipients, eBay’s quarterly results, the “Mint that Never Was”, coins flown into space presented to the NFB, coin collecting investing and taxation, and notable auctions. Gold is set to post its second weekly gain in a row. There is speculation that a continued decline in the dollar will drive further investment demand for gold.
Three products sold out at the US Mint this month. This includes the Louisa Adams First Spouse Coins, 2008 Silver Proof Set, and Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set for William and Anna Harrison.
On July 28, 2009, the US Mint will release the Guam Quarter First Day Cover. This product is limited to a maximum production of 25,000 units.
The American Numismatic Association has announced the Numismatist of the Year, Coin Dealer of the Year, and several other awards that will be presented at the World’s Fair of Money.
EBay reported their results for the second quarter of 2009. Topline revenue fell 4% and net income fell 29%. Their marketplaces business unit, which includes their auction site, showed a 14% revenue decline, however they believe that the declines to be stabilizing.
The intriguing story of the “Mint that Never Was.” A United States Mint facility was constructed in The Dalles, Oregon, a city at the center of a vast gold rush in the 1860′s.
NASA officials will present to the National Federation of the Blind two Louis Braille Silver Dollars that were flown into space.

This set seems to have emerged as one of the big winners of 2008. It’s the 2008 American Gold Buffalo 4 Coin Proof Set. This one is sealed in the original US Mint shipping box.
We’re still waiting for this year’s Lincoln Coin and Currency Set. Back in 2001, the US Mint offered the similar American Buffalo Coin and Currency Set.
