November 11, 2011: First Spouse Gold Coins, Circlating Coin Production, 1921 Morgan Dollars

We’re back to bring you another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, a look at the design candidates for the 2012 First Spouse Gold Coins, which were recently reviewed by the Commission of Fine Arts. The CFA has reviewed the design candidates for the 2012 First Spouse Gold Coins and offered their recommendations. The coins will feature Suffragist Alice Paul, Frances Cleveland (twice), and Caroline Harrison.

US Mint circulating coin production figures show a big increase for quarters. Could this be the start of higher mintage levels for America the Beautiful Quarters?

Here are some images of the 25th Anniversary Set recently received by a collector. There have been numerous reports about coins found loose in the boxes after capsules opened during shipping.

The US Mint’s new order management system is being developed by a British firm at a cost of up to $100 million under a maximum 6 year contract.

The Silver Institute has released a silver investment market report. They forecast that world silver investment will reach $10 billion this year, up 66% from last year.

Gold investing has become popular with younger investors. The company mentioned in this article indicates that their fastest growing segment of buyers are in the 25-to-35 year-old age bracket.

Dave Harper writes about palladium. The US Mint is in the process of performing a required marketing study to determine if there is sufficient demand for a one ounce palladium bullion coin.

Here is information on the launch ceremony for the James A. Garfield Presidential Dollar, held on the grounds of Garfield’s home in Mentor, Ohio. A number of other local events are also planned.

Sales will conclude next week for the US Mint’s Mount Hood Quarter and Zachary Taylor Dollar numismatic bags and rolls.

And now for some notable auctions. First, another look at the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Sets on eBay. There are now about 400 listings, up from less than 100 in the last update.

Next, a 1921 Peace Silver Dollar graded NGC MS 65 in an old holder. This was the first year for the series, struck in high relief.

Last, a complete collection of 1983-1997 US Mint Prestige Proof Sets. These sets include the coins found in standard sets plus proof versions of one or more commemoratives.
