November 30, 2011: ATB Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins, Legal Tender Gold and Silver

We’re back to bring you another fresh round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, the latest numismatic release for the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins. Also, a new US Mint numismatic product sales report, 2011 commemorative coins, ANA meeting, FUN educational programs, detecting altered surfaces, bust right half eagles, legal tender gold and silver, PCGS announcement, and notable auctions. The US Mint has released the 2010-P Olympic Five ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. This is the eighth release in the numismatic series that has been experiencing some sagging sales.

Here is the latest US Mint sales report, which takes focus on the 2011 commemorative coins. The lackluster sales should translate into some historically low mintages.

News from Utah where legislation has been passed to make gold and silver coins legal tender, although the impact on payments has been minimal. The Utah State Treasurer said, “In my mind there’s still no practical way of making this happen.”

Coin grading firm PCGS has announced changes for certain policies and indicated that no fees will be increased in the coming year.

And now for some notable auctions. First, an auction for the 2006 Proof Platinum Eagle 4 Coin Set. The US Mint discontinued the fractional proof versions of the coin after 2008. The same seller has several other Proof Platinum Eagle Sets up for auction.

Next, here is an auction for the 2005-2008 American Legacy Collections issued by the United States Mint. This short lived product type containing proof commemorative silver dollars is similar to the Prestige Sets issued during an earlier period.
