November 5, 2010: Silver Eagle Sales Break Record, Mount Hood Quarter, 1892 Half Disme

Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back with one more round up of coin collecting news and articles to wrap up the week! First, shortly following the release of the monthly sales report for United States Mint gold and silver bullion coins, Silver Eagles have reached a new annual record. Also, a look at the US Mint’s new branding, Mount Hood National Forest Quarter, pending coin bills, silver’s all time high price, Estonian euro start up coin sets, Collectors Universe financial results, Liberty Nickels, 1792 Half Disme, and notable auctions. Sales of the US Mint’s gold and silver bullion coins rose during October. More than 3 million ounces of silver and 94,000 ounces of gold coins were sold.

A few days into the current month, the number of Silver Eagle bullion coins sold for the year to date broke last year’s record annual sales.

Three upcoming products featuring America the Beautiful Quarters will be the first to feature the US Mint’s new branding.

With the price of silver still pushing higher, Dave Harper recounts the price movement of the metal when it reached its all time high in 1980.

According to this article from American Coin-Op, the subject of dollar coins invokes passion from laundry owners.

The Estonian Central Bank will begin selling start up sets of Estonian Euro coins to residents. The sets include 42 euro coins with a value of 12.79 euros.

Collectors Universe, the parent company of PCGS, reported financial results for the first quarter of their fiscal year. Net revenues were up 5%, driven by a 25% increase in coin units graded.

Numismaster provides an introduction to the Liberty Head Nickel series, with discussions of the “racketeer” nickels, key dates, and values.

Coinlink has an article on the background and history of the important 1792 Half Disme, which represented the first coinage of the United States Mint.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a 2005 Jefferson Nickel over struck on a 2005 Lincoln Cent. The mint error is authenticated by NGC and graded an incredible MS 68 RD.

Next, a plus sign and a sticker are included on this 1895 Liberty Double Eagle NGC MS64+ CAC.

Last, an 1893 Isabella Quarter that has interestingly been fashioned into a jewelry pin by cutting out the obverse fields of the coin, and adding a bezel and pin back.
