November 8, 2010: US Mint Proof Sets, Coin Bill Predictions, Counterfeit Detection

We are back with another fresh round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, a closer examination of the record breaking annual sales for the American Silver Eagle. The US Mint has sold a record 29,110,500 American Silver Eagle bullion coins for the year to date, a staggering amount compared to some of the earlier years of the series.

The rising market price of silver has resulted in a smaller premium for the upcoming 2010 Proof Silver Eagle- as long as the US Mint sticks with the announced $45.95 product price.

Dave Harper discusses the United States Mint’s various offerings for proof sets. At one time a single version was available, but this has expanded over the years to include various component sets and silver composition.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a group of six different First Spouse Gold Coins priced close to spot. The group includes the 2008-W Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin.

Next, a beautiful example of the Capped Bust Half Dollar, dated 1823 and graded PCGS AU58.

Last, the low mintage 1928 Peace Dollar graded NGC MS 65.
