Gold has been rising as the stock market falls and financial troubles mount. But it’s still below the record $1,033 price per ounce set on March 17.

Have you heard about “Presidential Oath Dollars?” These were created by the Denver Mint by placing a aluminum ring around a Presidential Dollar. They were limited to 1,000 each for the first six Presidents and slabbed by ANACS. HSN supposedly sold out their entire supply in 30 minutes and many people have been looking for information about them online. Here’s a Coin Talk thread with information and some collector opinions. There is also supposed to be an upcoming article in Coin World.

Susan Headley is starting a new feature Coin Dealer Reviews on About.com:Coins. The first review is on Chattanooga Coin.

Have you ever wondered how a coin price guide gets its prices? Here’s the answer from Coin World’s Coin Values.

Collector’s Universe (CLCT), the parent company of PCGS, announced some changes to improve financial performance. Their stock price recently declined to a four year low.

How would you react if your bank stopped giving back loose change? That’s exactly what this Texas bank has done and the bank says their customers “appreciate it.”

The Royal Spanish Mint releases a gold and silver est to mark the Bicentenary of the War of Independence.

And now for some notable auctions. First a 1916-D Mercury Dime graded PCGS MS62FB. This item has been relisted by the seller with no reserve and already received a whopping 94 bids!

A colorful 1951 Cameo Proof Roosevelt Dime graded PCGS PR66CAM.

And a near gem 1894 Morgan Dollar PCGS MS64.

That wraps it up for today!

The US Mint has announced the release date and pricing for the highly awaited Fractional Gold Buffalo Coins. Both proof and uncirculated versions will be offered in one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce sizes.

The Canadian Numismatic Association will hold their 2008 convention this week July 17 to July 20th in Ottawa.

Another thought provoking reaction to the National Parks Quarters proposal. Will it lead to “collector burnout”?

There’s a new world record for the longest line of coins. A forty mile long chain of pennies was placed on the ground in Fort Scott, Kansas.

    How’s this for a roll find? A 1925 Lexington-Concord Sesquicentennial Commemorative Half.

David Hall interviews Stewart Blay, owner of the legendary Red Copper Collection which will be on display at the ANA’s World’s Fair of Money.

Numismatic News takes a look at the key date 1928 Peace Dollar.

An interesting analysis on the relationship between oil, gold and the Dow during four key time periods.

The National Parks Quarter Bill is passed unanimously by the House of Representatives. In order to become law, it must still pass the Senate and be signed by the President.

Wyoming is looking forward to the new program since their Yellowstone National Park would grace the first new quarter.

But not everyone is thrilled about the idea of another 11 or 22 years of rotating quarter designs. Here’s the letter previously sent to his Representative.

Exactly how many 2008-W Silver Eagles with Reverse of 2007 were produced by the Mint? The current estimate is 47,000, but we might get some better data soon. See this CU Forum thread about a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act.

Here’s an offbeat story about two $1,000 bills that an elderly woman deposited into her local bank.

Do you pursue coin collecting as a hobby or an investment? Here’s a look at the rates of return for certain coin series from 1971 to 2008. In my opinion, if you are collecting coins for investment, focus on high grades or key dates for better rates of return, and try to have some fun anyway!

Two new coin blogs recently launched that look promising. The first is Coingrader Forum which discusses decisions and designations of grading services and related issues.
