Here’s a look at the sales figures so far for the 2008 Fractional Buffalo Gold Coins. The numbers are pretty solid, but are sales coming at the expense of the traditional American Eagle Fractional Coins?
There were two young coin collectors in the news. The first is an eight year old boy who won an 1808 Half Dollar Giveaway Competition. His name was drawn from a group of entrants who answered six difficult questions correctly.

August 7, 2008: Double Prosperity Set Response, 2008 Platinum Eagles
By admin | August 7, 2008
Welcome back to Coin Update!
We’re here to bring you another refreshing round up of the latest coin collecting news! First, is the price of gold being manipulated? Also, the Mint promotes its new Double Prosperity Set, one reporter reacts, silver coins in circulation, Platinum Eagles, Abe Lincoln, early Quarter Dollars, and notable auctions. On to the links…
This writer believes that the price of gold is being artificially depressed. Besides the conspiracy theory, the article also points out some of the seasonal trends of gold that might come into play.
The US Mint showcased the new Double Prosperity Set to a group of journalists at the San Francisco Mint. The Mint’s press release sounds a bit overly promotional. From Mint Director Edmund Moy, “The 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for coin collectors and the general public.” Honestly, this sounds like something the notorious World Reserve Monetary Exchange would publish.
Not every reporter in attendance was won over by the display. From MercuryNews.com, “Niche marketer Uncle Sam came west on Wednesday to shill shiny coins to Asian-Americans.”
Coin of the Day receives a Silver Quarter in change. I can’t remember the last time that’s happened to me, but it’s been a while.
Once again, 2008 Platinum Eagles have disappeared from the US Mint’s website? Are they being repriced, or is it possible that they are gone for good?
The lowest value coin in the Czech Republic will soon disappear. Interestingly, individual prices will still be quoted using the denomination, and final purchases will be rounded up.
I really got a kick out of this picture of Dave Harper and Abe Lincoln.
A forty year coin controversy is finally put to rest.
Numismaster provides some great information on Early Quarter Dollars.
And now for some notable auctions. Here’s a nice example of the ever-popular 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent grade PCGS MS64RD.
I’ve never really understood the appeal of Waffle Cancelled Coins, but here’s the cancellation performed on a 2007 John Adams Presidential Dollar.
And last, an original bank wrapped roll of 1971 Eisenhower Dollars.
That’s wraps up today. See you tomorrow!
