5 EuroWelcome back to Coin Update!

Also, a striking new design for a new 5 Euro Commemorative, Penny Harvest, the finest 1893-S Morgan Dollar, coin collecting in difficult economic times, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Dave Harper provides a nice short history of gold that might help you put some of gold’s recent attention in perspective.

Yet another article on gold price and gold demand. From the article: “Your college Econ 101 course may not help you understand the latest gold coin rush… gold has been both falling in price and in short supply.”

The designer describes the process of creating the new 5 Euro Commemorative Coin (today’s coin image). The theme is “Netherlands and Architecture.” The obverse of the coin is a portrait of the Queen constructed of the names of architects. The reverse of the coin is a circular bookshelf with the empty spaces creating an image of the Netherlands.

The 18th annual Penny Harvest has begun. Last year the Penny Harvest Field was filled with 100 million donated pennies weighing 300 tons.

The finest known 1893-S Morgan Dollar was recently purchased by Legend Numismatics. It’s graded PCGS MS67 and cost in excess of $1 million.

Coin World takes a look at US Mint Set packaging throughout the history of the offering from 1948 to present.

Numismaster looks at the Buffalo Nickel series including the famous Three Legged Buffalo Error.

An article from Doug Winter on collecting coins in difficult economic times. I can’t argue with his main points, especially “be patient” which is useful advice for most endeavors.

And now for some notable auctions. They call it a “Green Monster.” These are boxes of 500 Silver Eagles packaged by the US Mint. Here is a 2008 Green Monster Box.

One of the toughest Peace Dollar to find gem. It’s the 1925-S Peace Dollar graded NGC MS65.

And last, a roll of 1922 Peace Dollars in a US Treasury wrapper.

    Have a great evening!

Do you want to learn how to prospect for gold? It seems to be getting more popular. Here’s an article about a prospecting club called the New 49′ers. You can find their website at GoldGold.com.

This week’s Numismaster market update from Patrick Heller is titled “Why Gold Might Soar Over the Next Four Weeks.” Two weeks ago his update was titled “Will Gold Explode Higher in the Next Few Days?” I’m sure he’ll get his timing down eventually.

Can you believe it’s been 10 years already? The Hawaii State Quarter will be released into circulation on November 3, 2008.

October 27, 2008: Gold and Silver Demand, US Mint memo, Coin Dealer Interview

    By admin | October 27, 2008

2008 Gold EagleWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re back with a round up of the best and brightest coin collecting news from around the web.  First, an article focusing on the Royal Canadian Mint’s efforts to meet gold and silver demand. Also, Gold and Silver Eagle premiums, US Mint memo, the eBay lawsuit, nice local article on a coin dealer, an unusual octagonal coin, and notable auctions. On to the links…

An article from a Canadian newspaper about the pressure on the Royal Canadian Mint to produce enough gold. Quote from the Canadian Mint: “We have never produced more [gold] than what we are producing right now. We just can’t keep up with all the demand.”

Coin Values Online writes about the current high premiums for Gold and Silver American Eagles. Quote that sums things up pretty well: “You can’t rely on commodities exchange spot prices as a solid guideline to determine price. It comes down to a “value is in the eye of the beholder” scenario, and this unsettled situation may not change soon.”

The US Mint is starting to sell its final inventory of 2008 Platinum Eagle and 1/10 ounce Gold Eagle bullion coins today. The post includes the full memo issued by the US Mint explaining the allocation process.

Coin Collector’s Blog posts on the UGS lawsuit against eBay.  He brings up the different strategy of recently formed DGS, which is in the same boat as UGS.

The Royal Canadian Mint begins to issue a colored circulating quarter featuring the red poppy. The coin is issued to commemorate the end of World War I.

A local article interviewing a coin dealer. Some nice quotes to help you remember that coin collecting is also about having fun. “Everyone has access to coins. You can have a lot of fun for under a dollar”

Check out this octagonal gold coin which features a Viking Warrior and dragon ship.

From Numismaster: Did the U.S. Mint Put Secret marks on Its Coins?

And now for some notable auctions. First, a 1921 Peace Dollar in NGC MS 65. The coin is offered with no reserve.

An enormous group of Silver Proof State Quarters for sale.  This lot contains 20,000 coins which represent a face value of $5,000 and silver content of over 3,600 ounces.

And last, a 2007 Off Center Lincoln Cent. Apparently recent examples of off center error coins are difficult to come by.

    Have a great evening!
