September 21, 2009: US Mint News, Ancient Coins, 1992 Close AM Lincoln Cent Discovery

Flag Bearer GoldWelcome back to Coin Update!

Here’s another round up of news and articles on coins and coin collecting to start off the week. First, some informative updates related to US Mint issued coins and proposed coins. Also, an introduction to ancient coins, Hawaiian coins, the discovery of the second 1992 Close AM Lincoln Cent, the PCGS Registry Everyman Collections, Michael Jackson coins, Saint Gaudens Double Eagle coin video, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Some brief updates on coin news related to the US Mint, including the proposed September 11 Memorial Silver Dollar, one recently sold out product, and the CFA and CCAC design reviews for America the Beautiful Quarters.

A nice introductory article to ancient coin collecting that might spark a new area of interest for some collectors who might focus on current US or World Coin issues.

Coin Values Online reviews some recent sales for Hawaiian coins and provides some background on the five official coins issued for the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Where are the wealthy investing their money? According to this article from Times Online, investment interests include commercial property, wine, rare coins, trademarks, and memorabilia.

The second known specimen of the 1992 Close AM Lincoln Cent has been discovered. This incredible find came from searching circulated rolls of Lincoln Cents that seemed to have been searched and returned previously. This extremely rare variety has a possible value of $10,000 or more!

PCGS has launched the Everyman Collections category for their Set Registry.  The highest grade allowed is AU58 to allow “entry-level” collectors to build sets.  There are 141 Everyman Collections registered so far.

I have never liked the idea of creating “commemorative coins” by affixing stickers or applying color to legal tender US coins. It sounds like we’ll be seeing more of this with the “official” Michael Jackson Commemorative Coins.

The latest episode of the coin video series Spare Change has been posted on Coins TV. Watch the  Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin Video.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the lowest mintage quarter for 2009 so far – a full 50 Roll Box of 2009-D American Samoa Quarters.

Next, a 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar listed in a no reserve auction. It is graded F12 by PCGS.

And to finish today’s post, a full collection of 1986 to 2008 Proof Silver Eagles in original US Mint boxes.

Hi, I have been wondering what has happened to the set of the Lincoln silver dollar and the new lincoln pennies that was supposed to be sold by the mint this year. I remember that they set aside 50.000 of the silver dollars to do this set but they have never put it up for sale. Do you know anything about this set? Thanks.
