September 30, 2009: UHR Sales, 2009 Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set, Three Cent Pieces

2009 Lincoln Silver DollarsWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, a surprising change in trend for sales of the 2009 UHR Double Eagle. Also the US Mint’s hotly awaited Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set, top graded Silver Eagles fetch top prices, 1933 Double Eagles update, three cent pieces, coin cleaning, 1992 Close AM Lincoln Cent graded by PCGS, coin market report, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Has demand for the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin finally started to decline? Despite removing the ordering limits, weekly sales at the US Mint declined in the latest period.

The remaining details of the upcoming 2009 Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set have finally been revealed. The five coin set will have an ordering limit of just one per household and will go on sale October 15.

An article about Mark Yaffe, of the now bankrupt National Gold Exchange. It focuses on his 29,000 square-foot mansion and collection of music machines.

Some incredible prices for top graded American Silver Eagles at the September Long Beach auction. A 1991 Silver Eagle graded NGC MS 70 sold for $34,500 and a 1999 Silver Eagle graded NGC MS 70 sold for $27,600!

In addition to forfeiture of the 10 1933 Double Eagles, the government asks the court to declare that all 1933 Double Eagles are lawful property of the US government, except the one sold at auction in 2002.

Numismaster has two articles about three cent pieces that are a nice complement to one another. The first examines the history of the denomination in the United States and the second recommends collecting James B. Longacre’s nickel three cent pieces.

An article from NCS which explains the differences between natural and cleaned coin, and why coins can’t be “uncleaned.”

PCGS has authenticated and graded the recently discovered 1992 Close AM Lincoln Cent. The coin received a grade of PCGS MS62RD and is only the second known example for this variety.

Coin Collector’s Blog has a post on the Dollar ReDe$ign Project, an effort to get the US to redesign its currency.

CoinLink has the Legend Numismatics Market Report, which includes some interesting observations about the gold market.

And now for some notable auctions. First, top graded Proof 1997 $50 Gold Eagle PCGS PR70DCAM listed with no reserve.

Next, a beautiful rainbow toned 1951 Proof Roosevelt Dime graded NGC PF 67 with the Star designation.

Last, two low mintage gold commemorative coins sold together. The auction is for the 1996-W Olympic Flag Bearer and Cauldron $5 Gold Coins. The design for the Cauldron coin by Frank Gasparro is my favorite of the many 1995-1996 Olympic Commemorative coins.

That’s it for for now, but I wanted to mention that it’s my wife’s birthday today. Happy birthday Hristina!
