September 7, 2010: 2010 Proof American Gold Eagles, UK Coin Composition, Error Coins Book

We’re here to bring you a round up of the latest coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, a report of the US Mint’s gold and silver bullion sales for the latest month. US Mint bullion sales show a dramatic slow down in the latest monthly report. Sales of American Gold Eagle bullion coins dropped to their lowest monthly total since June 2008.

With gold bullion demand down, the US Mint has begun production of 2010 Proof Gold Eagles and expects to begin sales in mid-October. The status of 2010 Proof Silver Eagles remains uncertain.

In the UK, some have warned that a proposed change to the Royal British Mint’s 5p and 10p coins will be a disaster. The change to slightly thicker nickel coated steel coins would save the Royal Mint £7 or £8 million per year, but the costs of updating vending and coin machines could be £100 million or more.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a dramatic triple struck 2001-P New York Quarter with the second and third strikes 35% off center. The coin is authenticated and graded PCGS MS65.

Next, the key date 1885 Liberty Nickel graded PCGS AU55 with CAC Sticker, offered with no reserve. The same seller has several more Liberty Nickels in AU grades.

Last, the US Mint’s 1998 Kennedy Collector’s Set. This set includes the 1998 Robert F. Kennedy Silver Dollar and matte proof 1998-S Kennedy Half Dollar.
