US Coin News

This week, the United States Mint opened sales for three major products. This began with the release of the 2014-P Great Smoky Mountains Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, which represented the first numismatic release of the year for the large sized silver coin series. Later in the week, sales also began for the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Dollar products and the 2014-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle.

The numismatic product sales report issued at mid-week showed the opening figures for two sets of products and placed the Baseball Hall of Fame Silver Dollars extremely close to a sell out. By April 9, sales had been received to account for the entire maximum authorized mintage of the silver dollars, indicating a sell out. The US Mint continues to accept orders for placement on a waiting list.

Meanwhile, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee discussed candidates for a potential new reverse design for the American Silver Eagle and made a recommendation for the design shown as this week’s coin image.

I am in the US Mint’s subscription program which takes off 10% of the price of products offered. I signed up for numerous items, especially the American Silver Eagle proof and uncirculated. Recently I have encountered delays in processing orders. Orders were generally filled within one day of posting the sale date. Recently, this has changed. My subscription for the Presidential dollar rolls and the American Silver Eagle uncirculated have yet to be processed. This is a change. It is as if they wait to see how many coins they need and at that time do they actually make the coin. I would like to know what has happen to cause the Mint lose their capability in processing order in a timely manner. The same thing happen to the American Eagle Proof and 2013 “Limited Edition Silver Proof Set.” The same day it went on sale, once you put in your order, you are notified it is on back order. I did not receive the coins until March 11, 2013. Do anyone know what is going on at the Mint?
